Were youth workers, not glorified babysitters, not admin staff, we do youth work and asking us to do anything but defeats the object of our training s.

As a professional Youth Involvement Worker, I have worked within the statutory sector as an informal educator fostering the underlying youth work principles of democracy, inclusion and the empowerment of young people within their communty for many years. I beleived in working with young people to support them to identify their own needs and move towards self determination and autonomy. I defended the role of the youth worker as I beleived that the voluntary relationship with young people was unique in enabling them to have a voice and be listened to and to make their own choices. I did this often in isolation, just managing to keep to my principles and head above water. I was under the illusion that I COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE and that good youth work practice would win through in the end!
Yesterday, I read this article and up until then I thought I was alone in my thoughts, trying to come to terms with the contradictions as an agent of social control.
Today, I smelt the coffee so to speak (or was it the ritualistic burning of all those philosophical text books related to good youth work practice thatI had so diligently learnt in my training. The core pinciples related to ADP, the voluntary relationship between the young person and the youth worker; Friere’s ‘Freedom to learn’ and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) all being systematically torched on the bonfires of New Labour’s social polices and being fuelled by the effects of new managerialism taking control of all of our lives?
Is this the type of Service that I want to be part of, or is it the sort of world that I want my children and grand children to live in? Dare I say NO!
YES I CAN, BUT HOW MANY OTHER YOUTH WORKERS OUT THERE ARE BEING TOLD THAT IT IS THEIR FAILURE FOR BEING OUT OF STEP, FOR NOT ACCEPTING CHANGE AND NOT CONFORMING TO THE STATUS QUO?
IT IS THE RIGHT TIME TO STAND UP FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE IN AND CHALLENGE THE SYSTEM TO ACT AS A CATALYST FOR CHANGE!
Thank you Tony Taylor for putting pen to paper and opening up the debate.
Regards,
Lee Reeves.

Hi there,
I am wondering if any one can help me, I am looking to start up my own youth club in Sheffield (South Yorkshire) i have a very strong team of workers but no location as of yet.
I have e-mailed certain places such as housing ect.
I have been told to get in contact with Sue Atkins who works around Sheffield as many people have said that she is great and would be able to help me and my team with this. If any one has an email adress or work number that I could contact her on that wold be great.
I would be greatful for any support, help or advice that any one could offer
Many thanks
Jenna
